Artist:
GEORGE HAMMOND STEEL
Title:
'MOUSEHOLE
HARBOUR, CORNWALL', original watercolour - framed
Description:
George Hammond Steel (1900-1960) was a painter of landscapes
and coastal scenes in oil and watercolour. He was born in
Sheffield and studied at Sheffield School of Art, and later
in Birmingham and London. Hammond Steel exhibited regularly
at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Watercolour
Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal West of
England Academy, Glasgow Institute, Paris Salon, etc. He is
represented in a number of public collections.
Prior to World War II, Steel's work was highly
accomplished yet consisted of rather conventional
landscapes. Subsequently, in the late 1940s and 1950s,
he produced a body of work which is very different in
execution and technique, and which is now prized by
collectors. He is most noted for his atmospheric
paintings of coastal scenes, especially of Cornwall and
East Anglia, his Essex cottage subjects, and Derbyshire
landscapes. The oils often have extensive sgraffito
(scratching to the surface of the paint by the artist)
and he employed a variety of glazes to good effect.
The present work is a watercolour, not signed but
inscribed 'Mousehole' verso. It is most likely to date
to the period 1955-60, and is guaranteed to be the work
of George Hammond Steel. It is one of three paintings
we had by this artist recently - the other two (one also
a Cornish harbour subject) were both signed. We think
this work was the one sold by Phillips Auctioneers in
London on 20th June 2000, lot 220. The watercolour has
a visible image size of 8.7 x 10.7 inches, and in its
recent handmade frame it measures 15.2 x 17.2 inches.
The work is in good fresh condition but on very close
inspection it does have some minor sporadic foxing. The
frame is excellent...
