Artist:
Robert Scanlan
Title:
'Coastal scene with rocks' - original gouache with
watercolour, unframed
Description:
Robert
Scanlan (born
1908 Cork, Ireland) was a painter, printmaker
and illustrator. He studied art in London and in
Europe, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Leicester
Galleries etc. Scanlan served
with the London Irish Rifles in World War Two and his
1941 painting 'Sentries in a Guard Room' was acquired
for the Imperial War Museum.
He
designed posters for London Transport 1949-60, examples
of which may be viewed at the London Transport Museum
website. Robert Scanlan
lived in London, SW19.
The present work is in mixed media (gouache with some
watercolour) and measures 14.7 x 18 inches image size.
It was acquired from the artist's studio in the mid
1980s, and we think it will date to the late 1950s
or early 1960s. It is possibly an Irish coastal
landscape. The work may be signed lower right but we are
not sure if this is a signature or not! A close up
image will be supplied on request.
The painting is unframed, and it is in excellent fresh
condition save for some very minor losses at the
corners. It will look fantastic once framed...
