'Fruit' - original oil painting on canvas, framed
Description:
Mary W Smith
(1904-1992) was a painter in oils of still lifes,
interiors and portraits. She was born in Bury,
Lancashire, nee Parker, and studied art at the Slade
School in London where she won prizes for drawing,
painting and composition. She exhibited extensively at
the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Royal Society
of Portrait Painters, and with the Womens International
Art Club of which group she became a member. Her work is
represented in Manchester City Art Gallery and Bury Art
Gallery. Mary Smith lived in London for many years and
later at Barcombe in East Sussex.
The present work is an oil on canvas and measures 16
x 20 inches, excluding the frame. It was acquired
directly from the estate of the former owner who bought
it at auction very many years ago. The painting is
signed and dated 1957, and is housed in its original
frame, with the remnants of various exhibition labels
attached. Both the painting and the frame are in
excellent original condition. A painting titled 'Fruit'
was exhibited by the artist at the Royal Academy in 1958...
