Artist:
Peter Downing
Title:
'Abstract' - (original signed lithograph - mounted but
unframed)
Description:
Peter A Downing (born 1926) was a painter and
printmaker, who studied at Leeds College of Art and then
at the Royal College of Art, London. He lived near
Morecambe Bay in Lancashire and taught art at Preston
Polytechnic (now the University of Central Lancashire),
retiring in 1984. He exhibited several works at the
Royal Academy from 1951, and showed widely, including at
the Bradford Print Biennale and with an Arts Council
Touring exhibition. His work is held in the National
Gallery of Australia.
The present example is an original abstract
lithograph hand signed, dated (19)62 and annotated
'Artist's Proof'. It shows an interesting development
in his work from the figurative etchings, aquatints and
lithographs Downing produced during the 1950s. This
lithograph measures about 16 x 24 inches image size. It
is in good condition, with very fresh colours, not all
of which are picked up by our camera, although it has
been laid down on a board and the mount (original we
think) has suffered some damage to the lower right
corner (please see image 3)...
