Artist:
S HORNE SHEPHERD
Title:
'Girl Seated' (an original signed watercolour with some pen
and ink - unframed)
Description:
Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd
(1909-1993) is noted in particular for his figure
subjects, often nudes, and his still lifes. He was born
in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and
then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He
came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at
the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art
Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern
Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish
Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life. An
exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth was held
at The Queen's Gallery in Dundee in October 2009.
We recently acquired a further selection of watercolours
and drawings from the artist's sketchbooks from the
1960s, which came originally directly from Horne
Shepherd's studio. The main item listed (images 1 and 2)
is of a girl seated. It is an original signed
watercolour with some pen and ink, measuring about 10.7
x 5.2 inches image size on paper measuring
11.7 x 8 inches. It is in very good condition, save for
some very minor creasing at the edges and two filing
holes as pictured, which are well away from the image
and will not be visible once the painting is framed.
We are also showing here two further such works by Horne
Shepherd (images 3 & 4). Both of these are signed by
the artist and both are unframed and in good condition,
save for some minor undulations in the paper and minor
creasing to the paper at two corners of the nude
drawing. Brief details are 'Nude Reclining' (charcoal,
9.6" x 18.3" - £50) and 'Still Life with bottles and vegetables' (watercolour,
pastel, and pen & ink, 11" x 8.1" - £55)...
