Artist:
S HORNE SHEPHERD
Title:
'Portrait of a young woman in a green dress' (an
original oil painting on board - unframed) Description:
Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd
(1909-1993) is noted in particular for his figure
subjects, often nudes, and his still lifes. He was born
in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and
then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He
came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at
the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art
Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern
Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish
Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life.
An exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth was
held in Dundee in October 2009.
We recently acquired a further selection of paintings,
drawings and prints which came originally directly from
Horne Shepherd's studio. The main item listed (image 1)
is an oil painting on board of a young woman wearing a
green dress. It measures about 11.2 x 9 inches on a
Chas H West of London NW3 canvas board, and is most
likley to date from the mid 1950s. It is unsigned and
is in good condition (although may benefit from a light
clean) and is unframed.
We are also showing here three further works by Horne
Shepherd (images 2, 3 & 4). Each of these is signed by
the artist and all are unframed and
in good condition. Brief details are in order
shown 'Standing Nude' (watercolour & charcoal, 11" x 7",
probably early 1980s - £60), 'Seated woman in orange
gown' (watercolour & gouache, 9.4"x5.7", probably 1970s
- £50), and 'Still
Life with comport' (wash and pen & ink, 11" x 8.1" -
£60)...
