Artist:
Eric Waugh
Title:
'Orange Undulations'
- original signed painting in mixed media on paper, framed
Description:
Eric Waugh (born 1929) studied at Croydon School of Art
(1946-50) and the Royal College of Art (1950-53). He
exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club
etc, and with Roland Browse Delbanco in Cork Street,
London W1. He painted landscapes, figure subjects
(often with sporting activities such as cycling,
skating, swimming), and some abstracts. His work was
illustrated in The Studio publication of 1957 'Young
Artists of Promise' and in Philip Vann's book 'Face to
Face', which included a self portrait. He lived at
South Nutfield in Surrey in the 1950s and 1960s and
later in Mexico, Spain and Cornwall.
The present work is an original unframed painting in
mixed media, signed by the artist and dated 1965. It is
quite small and measures about about 7.1 x 7.2 inches
image size. It is titled 'Orange Undulations', according
to an old exhibition sticker attached to the glass, and
this work appears to have been #29A, possibly from
Waugh's show at Roland Browse Delbanco. The frame is
original but has suffered a number of losses over time.
The painting itself is in good condition save for some
undulations (excuse the pun on the title of the work!)
in the paper.
We think this work was inspired by the artist's visit to
the Baltic coast in Germany, in particular the dunes
around the town of Ostsee. Waugh painted a series of
pictures there in 1965 / 1966...
