Artist:
S HORNE SHEPHERD
Title:
'Girls and Cat' (an original signed linocut - unframed)
Description: Scottish
painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd (1909-1993) is
noted in particular for his figure subjects, often
nudes, and his still lifes. He was born in Dundee and
he studied at Dundee School of Art and then at the
Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He came to
London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at the
Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club,
London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery,
Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish Artists,
etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life.
We understand that an exhibition to mark the centenary
of his birth is due to be held in Dundee in October 2009.
We recently acquired a further selection of drawings and prints
(July 2009), which came originally directly from Horne
Shepherd's studio. The main item listed (image 1) is an
original linocut of girls and a black cat. It is pencil
signed, measuring about 26.5 x 19.8 inches sheet size
and about 20.7 x 16 inches image size, and is
unframed. This
work is likely to date to the late 1960s and is very
redolent of that period. The print is in nice condition
save for some light creasing in the margins and a one
inch tear to the paper at the extreme right hand edge,
which won't show once the piece is mounted and framed.
We are also showing here two further such works by Horne
Shepherd (images 4 & 5). One of these is signed by the
artist and both are unframed and in good condition, save
for some minor creasing in the paper. Brief details are
'Female nudes in a Deco Interior' (linocut 10" x 11.7 "
- unsigned £55) and 'Reclining Nude'
(lithograph, 15" x 22", this also has some light foxing
upper right - signed £90)...
