Artist: David Smith

Title: 'Ingot and Furnace' - original signed lithograph, unframed

Description: David Smith, RE (1920-1998) was a painter and printmaker in the Expressionist tradition, mainly of landscapes and marine subjects, but some abstracts too. He studied at Lowestoft and Norwich Schools of Art, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London being awarded a Scholarship at the British School, Rome 1949.  David Smith exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, London Group and Royal Society of Painter Etchers to which body he was elected a member in 1951. He also held more than sixty one-man shows of his work at home and abroad.  Smith was senior lecturer in fine art at Chelsea School of Art 1965-79.  He travelled to many regions of the world, painting and drawing as he went, including South Africa, Peru, United States, and Antarctica.  He also found many subjects nearer to home in East Anglia. His work is held in several public collections, including at Portsmouth, Sheffield, Lincoln and Blackpool.

We have quite a large selection of prints by David Smith, including relatively scarce examples of his work from the 1960s. The present print is an original lithograph titled 'Ingot and Furnace', which is signed and dated 1968 and numbered 9 from a small edition of 12.
It retains its very strong fresh colour and appears never to have been framed.  It measures an impressive 25 x 18.7 inches image size and is in very good condition save for some very light handling creases outside the image and a very short tear to the paper at the right edge (about 5 mm only).  Of course it will look pristine once mounted and framed
.

We are showing two further prints we have by David Smith (images 4 and 5).  These are also unframed lithographs and are both pencil signed, dated, titled and editioned.  'Karoo Motif No 2' (priced at £65) measures about 14.3 x 21.5 inches image size and is dated 1970 and editioned #6 of 12. It has fresh colours and is in good condition save for the creases to the paper as pictured, and a very small 'nick' to the paper at the top edge. 'Marshland' (priced at £60) measures about 15.5 x 21.5 inches image size, and is dated 1965 and editioned #6 of 9.  This print is on good quality heavy paper and is in good condition save for minor creases to the margins and some minor sporadic foxing to the lower right corner and lower edge of the print.
Additional images and further details will be supplied gladly on request
