Title:
Scottish Landscape -
signed painting in acrylic on board, framed
Description: David
J Ewans is a well known Scottish painter of coastal
scenes and landscapes in oil. He exhibited twenty works
at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1955 to 1970, and
lived variously in Edinburgh, Lower Largo (Fife), and
Dumfries. He often painted in Arbroath, Pittenweem, St
Monance, and later in Kirkcudbright and Southerness in
south-west Scotland. David Ewans' work is held in
several public collections in Scotland, including
Aberdeen Art Gallery and the University of Dundee.
The
present painting is an original acrylic on board
measuring 24 x 36 inches and about 30 x 42 inches in
what we believe to be the original frame. The work is
signed lower right and dated 1966. The painting is in
very good original condition, having been cleaned
professionally in July 2009. The frame is in just about
serviceable condition for its age, with some losses to
the moulding and some areas of staining to the hessian
slip.
Although the present painting does not have a label, we
feel sure that it is a Scottish landscape. In view of
the subject matter, we do wonder whether it is in fact
the painting titled 'Erosion' exhibited by Ewans at the
Royal Scottish Academy in 1966...
