Artist: Brian Chugg

Title: High Moor Four (original signed oil painting on board - framed)

Description: Brian Chugg (1926-2003) was an artist, author and lecturer, passionate about the conservation of the countryside of Exmoor.  He was born in Braunton, Devon, and studied at Bideford School of Art 1946-49, and Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, London 1949-50. He became a lecturer in art at North Devon College 1953-79, and exhibited his work widely, including at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Piccadilly Gallery in London.

The present work is an original oil painting on board, measuring about 22.5 x 15.7 inches image size and about 26 x 19 inches in what appears to be the original frame.  The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1963 lower right, and verso it has the artist's label, giving the title as 'High Moor Four', a reference or exhibition number for the work of #301, and his then address in Barnstaple.  The work is in good condition for its age, with some very minor surface abrasions. It may benefit from a light professional clean but we would prefer to keep it in totally original condition.  The frame has had some wear and tear over the years as pictured but it is serviceable.

We think this painting represents a stylised view of Exmoor, from a period when Brian Chugg was producing very interesting paintings with a strong personal vision.  A selection of his paintings and drawings of Exmoor were shown in 2006 at a retrospective exhibition in the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon...
