Title:
'The Recital' - an original signed oil painting on panel
- unframed
Description: John
G C Burnett (born 1916) is a painter of landscapes,
figure subjects, and in his earlier years of works with
a strong Surrealist influence, in both oil and
watercolour. He studied at Gray's School of Art in
Aberdeen and later became an art teacher in order to
supplement his income from painting. During World War
II he was based in southern England as an officer with
responsibility for searchlights to help identify enemy
aircraft, and during this period he painted a number of
war pictures with searchlights featuring as major
elements of the composition. He exhibited at the Royal
Academy in 1945 (two paintings) and in the 1950s at the
Royal Scottish Academy from addresses in Aberdeen and
then in Banff. He now lives in the north of England.
The present work is an oil on panel measuring 19.2 x 23
inches, signed and dated (19)44 and titled 'Recital' on
the Aberdeen exhibition label verso. The painting has a
very strong Surrealist influence and we understand it
depicts the artist's wife upper left. The provenance is
the artist's studio. The painting was cleaned recently
and a few minor scratches to the paint surface were
touched in professionally at the same time. It is
presently unframed but we will be happy to arrange
framing at reasonable additional cost should the
purchaser require assistance...
