Artist:
Evelyn Abelson
Title:
'Carlton House Terrace' (London SW1) - an original
signed oil painting on canvas - framed
Description: Evelyn
Abelson, RBA (1886-1967) was a painter
of town scenes, especially views of London. She was
born in London and studied at Campden Hill School and
Heatherley's School of Fine Art. She exhibited
extensively at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club,
Society of Women Artists, National Society of Painters
and Gravers, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the
Royal Society of British Artists of which latter society
she was elected a member. Evelyn Abelson also painted
in northern France, Austria and Italy. She lived in
London W2.
The present work is an oil on canvas measuring 10 x 12
inches image size. It is signed lower left and inscribed
by the artist with the title verso. The painting also
has a label from a retrospective exhibition of her work,
which we think took place in the early 1960s. The
painting will date most likely to the late 1930s or
1940s and it is in excellent condition although what is
left of the original frame is really only an inner
slip. The moulding is missing and a purchaser therefore
should budget for replacement of the frame.
Carlton House Terrace is situated between Pall Mall and
The Mall, close to Trafalgar Square. This is an area of
central london in which Evelyn Abelson found many of her
subjects...
