Title:
'Marine
Parade' - an original pencil signed etching with aquatint,
in part finished by hand - unframed Description:
Jack Coutu, ARE, ARCA (born 1924, Farnham, Surrey) is a
painter, printmaker, sculptor, and carver of netsuke. He
studied sculpture at the local School of Art 1947-51;
stained glass at the Royal College of Art in London
1951-54; and under Merlyn Evans at the Central School of
Arts and Crafts 1951-55. Jack Coutu taught printmaking
at the Central School 1957-65, and later at the West
Surrey College of Art and Design 1965-85. He has been a
member of the Printmakers Council and has shown his work
at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of
Painter-Etchers, the Bradford Print Biennale etc. He had
a two-man show at the Alecto Gallery 1965 in conjunction
with Michael Rothenstein and a one-man show at the
Graphic Arts Gallery 1968. His work is held by the
British Council, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston MA, and Bradford City Art
Gallery.
The
present work is an unframed original etching with
aquatint, in part finished by hand, measuring about 16.7
x 23.6 inches image size and 21 x 29.5 inches sheet
size. It is pencil signed, dated (19)60, titled 'Marine
Parade', and annotated 'Artist's Proof, 2nd state'. On
the reverse the artist has inscribed in pencil his name,
the title, and the original price of this work (10
guineas). Although we cannot be certain we think this
work is probably unique in this state. It is in good
condition save for some creasing to the margins, a small
nick along the top margin, and some handling marks also
to the margins.
We
also have other paintings by Jack Coutu, including an
early work influenced we think by Merlyn Evans. One
example is also shown here, depicting a seated harlequin
with white bird (gouache, signed and dated 1955, image
7.8" x 5.7", framed - £150)...
