William
Dring
Title:
'Portrait of Melissa, the artist's daughter' - an original
signed oil painting on canvas, framed Description:
(Dennis) William Dring, RA, RWS, RP (1904-1990) was a
very well known painter of portraits and landscapes in
oil, watercolour and pastel. He was born in London, his
younger brother being the painter James Dring. William
Dring studied at the Slade School under Henry Tonks
1922-25. He met and married his fellow artist Elizabeth
Rothwell who was the model for many of his paintings and
drawings. During World War II Dring was an official war
artist and his work is represented in the Imperial War
Museum.
William Dring was elected ARA 1944 and a full member of
the Royal Academy 1955. He was also a member of the
prestigious Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal
Society of Portrait Painters. He had a number of Royal
commissions including painting the christening of HRH
Prince Charles the Prince of Wales. In 1990 Agnew's held
a major retrospective exhibition of his work which
unfortunately he was unable to attend due to illness.
The
present work is an oil painting on canvas ,measuring 16
x 12 inches image size, of Melissa the artist's younger
daughter who later became an artist herself. It is
signed and dated we think (19)50 and the provenance is
the artist's studio near Winchester. It is in
good original condition and is housed in a more modern
frame which is also in good order save for some minor
losses. There is a Bourlet agents label attached to the
stretcher indicating that this work had been sent by the
artist for exhibition. An oil of Melissa was shown at
the Royal Academy in 1952 but we do not know whether
this is the exhibited picture...
