- (an original etching and watercolour, framed)
Description:
Jennifer Dickson, RA, RE (born 1936, South Africa) is known
internationally as a printmaker, photographer, painter and
teacher. She studied at Goldsmiths School of Art in London
1954-59, and then at S W Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. She
exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1959, being elected a
full member in 1976, and is also a member of the Royal
Society of Painter Printmakers. Jennifer Dickson emigrated
to Canada in 1969 and she became a Canadian citizen,
receiving the Order of Canada in 1995.
Her work is held in many public collections, including the
British Museum; the Victoria & Albert Museum; the
Metropolitan Museum, New York; the National Gallery of
Canada, Ottawa; the Hermitage, St Petersburg, Russia;
National Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa, etc.
The present work is an original etching with watercolour,
titled 'Through the Mirror', pencil signed and studio
stamped by Jennifer Dickson and numbered 9 from a low
edition of 20. The work is not dated but based on
other examples we have seen from the period we think this
work to be circa 1978. The piece measures about 21.5 x 19.5
inches image size and about 32 x 24.5 inches framed
size. The work is in good condition, save for what appears
to be relatively small two soft creases. The silver coloured
frame is in good order. This work demonstrates the artist's
interest in the use of mirrors and reflections during the
late 1970s period and her challenging of assumptions about
gender and sexuality...
