Sean Crampton
Title:
'Figures by a street lamp' (an original signed etching,
unframed)
Description:
Sean Crampton, GM, MC, PRBS (1918-1999) was an important
sculptor, printmaker, and war veteran, who was honoured for
his bravery and self sacrifice during World War II with the
George Medal and the Military Cross. Born in Manchester, he
studied at the Vittoria School of Art in Birmingham 1930-33,
then at the Central School of Art Birmingham, and finally in
Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish
Academy, Royal West of England Academy, Leicester Galleries
etc, and was elected President of the Royal Society of
British Sculptors. He lived at Calne in Wiltshire.
The present work is a scarce original etching of figures
by a street lamp, which is pencil signed, dated (19)57,
and inscribed 'Artist's Proof 3 of 5'. The etching
measures about 14.7 x 10.7 inches image size and is on a
full sheet. It is a powerful piece of work, redolent of
the work of artists such as Edward Burra. As may be seen
from the images the paper has some significant creasing
to the margins and the margins are also a little soiled.
The image itself is in good condition, being a strong
early impression, save for some sporadic light foxing
with is not really noticeable...
