Artist: Sydney Horne Shepherd

Title: 'Abstract in red, yellow and black'  (an original signed linocut - unframed)

Description: Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd (1909-1993) is noted in particular for his figure subjects, often nudes, and his still lifes.  He was born in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s.  He came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish Artists, etc.  He moved to West Sussex later in life.  We understand that an exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth is due to be held in Dundee later in October.

We recently acquired a further selection of drawings and prints, which came originally directly from Horne Shepherd's studio. The item shown here is an original abstract linocut, measuring 15.7" x 20.7" image size and about 20" x 30" sheet size.  The work is signed in pencil lower right and it is unframed.  The image itself is in very good condition.  The paper to the upper margin is creased heavily and there is some foxing near to the edge of this margin, but not close to the printed image.

We are also showing here a further work by Horne Shepherd (image 3). This is signed by the artist and is unframed and in good condition, save for some minor creasing to the margins.  Brief details are 'Girl Undressing', a linocut 9.8" x 7.5" image size, printed in green on T H Saunders 1945 handmade paper with wide margins - price £55.  The shipping on this item is £5 to UK Mainland...
