Artist:
David Smith
Title:
'The Quarry' -
original etching with aquatint, unframed
Description:
David Smith, RE (1920-1998) was a painter and printmaker in
the Expressionist tradition, mainly of landscapes and marine
subjects, but some abstracts too. He studied at Lowestoft
and Norwich Schools of Art, and later at the Slade School of
Fine Art in London being awarded a Scholarship at the
British School, Rome 1949. David Smith exhibited widely,
including at the Royal Academy, London Group and Royal
Society of Painter Etchers to which body he was elected a
member in 1951. He also held more than sixty one-man shows
of his work at home and abroad. Smith was senior lecturer
in fine art at Chelsea School of Art 1965-79. He travelled
to many regions of the world, painting and drawing as he
went, including South Africa, Peru, United States, and
Antarctica. He also found many subjects nearer to home in
East Anglia. His work is held in several public collections,
including at Portsmouth, Sheffield, Lincoln and Blackpool.
We have quite a large selection of prints by David Smith,
including relatively scarce examples of his work from the
1960s.
The present print is an original etching with aquatint of a
quarry, which we believe to be a subject in North Wales,
probably at or near to Festiniog. It is a trial proof and is
unsigned by the artist. We believe that this etching came
from the sale of the contents of the artist's studio in
2000. It measures about 18 x 24 inches image size and about
22.5 x 30.5 inches sheet size. The etching is on fine
quality BFK Rives paper which has deckle edges. It is in
very good condition and is unframed...
