Artist:
Sydney Horne Shepherd
Title:
'Study of an Oriental Girl' (an original signed monotype - unframed
Description:
Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd (1909-1993)
is noted in particular for his figure subjects, often nudes,
and his still lifes. He was born in Dundee and he studied
at Dundee School of Art and then at the Glasgow School of
Art in the late 1920s. He came to London in the mid 1930s,
and later exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists,
New English Art Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries,
Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of
Scottish Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in
life.
We understand that an exhibition to mark the centenary of
his birth is due to be held in Dundee later in October.
We recently acquired a further selection of drawings and
prints by this artist which came originally directly from
Horne Shepherd's studio. The item shown here is an
original monotype (most probably a unique work), measuring
22 x 15.2 inches, which we think dates from the 1950s. The
work is hand signed by the artist lower left and it is
unframed. The monotype is in very good condition.
We are also showing here two further works by Horne Shepherd
(images 3 & 4). Both are signed by the artist and are
unframed and in good condition except as mentioned below.
Brief details are - 'Reclining Nude' (red and white chalks
on grey paper 10.2" x 15", circa 1960s, the paper has some
minor tears at the edges and a crease lower right hand
corner - £45); and 'Still Life with bottles and fruit'
(monotype on Japan paper measuring 11.6"x17.6" image size
and 16"x20" sheet size, circa 1950s, some creasing to
corners of sheet - £70)...
