Artist:

Title:
'Abstract 1963' - an original pencil signed linocut printed
from three blocks in blue, violet and turquoise; framed
Description:
Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) was one of the most
influential printmakers and art teachers of the 20th
century and was also noted as a painter of abstract and
surrealist pictures.
He was born in
London, son of William Harry Hayter, an artist, and
great nephew of Sir George Hayter. Hayter studied art in
his
father's studio and at Academie Julian, Paris, where his
fellow students included Anthony Gross. In 1927 Hayter
founded Atelier 17 in Paris which subsequently became
a most influential
printmaking school through which some of the world’s finest
printmakers passed early in their careers. The school was
later transferred to New York but reopened in Paris in 1950,
the New York branch being closed in 1955. Hayter’s first
one-man show was held in 1928 at the Claridge
Gallery. He was a member
of the Surrealist Group 1933-40. In 1939 he married Helen
Phillips, the American sculptor. His work is represented
in many public collections internationally. He received the
Legion d’Honneur in 1951 and lived most of his life in
Paris, which is where he died.
We have acquired three original small linocuts by Hayter
which were sent as Christmas cards by Bill and Helen
Hayter to close friends and relatives. The present
examples were all sent to the eminent art critic and
author J P Hodin (1905-1995) and the provenance is his
personal library and subsequently the well known
dealership Sandra Higgins Fine Art of Blackheath, London
SE7. Each linocut is very nicely framed and is ready to
hang.
There is some very useful information about Hayter's
Greeting Cards noted on the reverse of each of these
framed prints. Briefly reference is made to the
standard work on Hayter by Black and Moorhead titled
'The Prints of Stanley William Hayter'. It appears that
Hayter is known to have sent 23 of these annual cards
from 1943 until 1968. Rather than repeat all the
additional information here we have photographed the
detail which is available in our third image.
The present work is pencil signed by Hayter, dated
(19)63 and inscribed verso 'All the best of '64, Bill &
Helen'. It measures about 3.8 x 4.8 inches image size
(about 10 x 12.5 cms) and is in very good fresh
condition save for a tiny amount of printers ink in the
margin...
