Artist:
Zdzislaw Ruszkowski
Title:
'Nude in the Bathtub' - an original signed aquatint, mounted
but unframed
Description:
Zdzislaw
Ruszkowski (1907-1991)
was a well known painter in oil and watercolour, and
printmaker, of landscapes and figure subjects. He was born
at
Tomaszow in Poland and studied
art at Krakow Academy 1924-29 and at the Warsaw
Academy 1930-32. He worked in Paris
1934-39, and moved to Scotland in 1940 with the Polish Army
settling subsequently in 1944 in north London. He exhibited
widely in Britain and abroad and had a major retrospective
at Leeds City Art Gallery in 1966. That same year a
beautifully illustrated book titled 'Ruszkowski, Life and
Work' by J P Hodin was published by Cory, Adams and Mackay.
Regular one man shows were held at Roland Browse Delbanco in
London and he also showed at the Leicester Galleries and the
New Grafton Gallery. His work is represented in several
public collections.
The art critic and author J P Hodin (1905-1995) was a
good friend of the artist and we have been able to
acquire an aquatint
by Ruszkowski which came originally from Paul Hodin's
library following his death. We imagine it was a gift
from the artist. Two very similar works are illustrated
as #39 and 40 in the section of monochrome plates in
Hodin's book from 1966. The author dated the illustrated
prints, one of which features a nude woman, to 1947 and
1948. This work is an original pencil signed aquatint
measuring about 7.9 x 5.4 inches image size
on a sheet measuring 10 x 9 inches. The print is in good
condition with some light toning to the edge of the
margins and three or four light ripples to the paper at
the right hand margin not affecting the image. It
is mounted ready for framing.
We think this work will also date to the late 1940s and
we believe it to be scarce...
