Charles Duranty
Title:
The Peace of an Empty Place
- original signed watercolour with some gouache, framed
Description:
Charles Duranty (1918-2006) was a landscape painter in
watercolour, born in Romford, Essex. He exhibited at many
of the leading London galleries, including Roland, Browse &
Delbanco; Mercury Gallery; Zwemmer Gallery; and had one man
shows at the Leicester Galleries 1969, New Grafton Gallery
1970, and the Thackeray Gallery from 1971. His obituary in
The Guardian noted that his pictures 'were always imaginary
East Anglian landscapes, with huge fields and somewhere a
tiny animal, traction engine or human figure to give the
picture a focus and, quite often, its title'. His work is
held in the Government Art Collection and in provincial art
galleries, and Charles Duranty lived near Guildford in
Surrey.
The present work is an original watercolour with
gouache measuring about 5 x 17 inches image size and about
11.7 x 23.5 inches in its original frame. The painting is
signed lower right and has the labels of both The Thackeray
Gallery of London W8 and the artist verso. Both the
watercolour and the frame are in excellent condition...
