Artist:
Hugh Cronyn
Title:
David
Garnett in France - an original signed oil painting on
canvas, framed
Description:
Hugh Cronyn (1905-1996)
was a painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes, figure
subjects and portraits. Born in Vancouver in Canada, Cronyn
studied art under Frank Johnston (one of the Group of
Seven), then in New York 1929, and later in Fontainebleau
and Paris, including under Andre L'Hote. He settled in
London in the mid 1930s and later served in the War in the
RNVR, receiving the George Medal for his work in bomb
disposal. Cronyn taught painting at Colchester School of Art
1949-69, and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy
1945-86, New English Art Club, the London Group, Royal West
of England Academy, The Phoenix Gallery in Lavenham and
London, and The Minories Colchester, etc. He spent his later
years living in Hammersmith but retained a farmhouse in the
Lot and Quercy region of south west France.
The present work is an original oil painting on
canvas signed by the artist lower right, dated
(19)71, and titled on the paper label verso
'David Garnett in France'. On the back there is
also an artist's label showing Cronyn's address
in Colchester, Essex and a Bourlet and Sons Ltd
label which suggests the work may have been sent
for exhibition. The oil measures 24 x 36 inches
canvas size and about 30 x 42 inches in its
frame, which we feel confident is original to
the painting. The work is in very good
condition having recently been cleaned
professionally.
David Garnett, CBE (1892-1981) was a well known
writer and publisher, born in Brighton. He was a
member of the Bloomsbury Group, and his second
marriage was to Angelica Bell, daughter of
Duncan Grant. Later in life he lived in France,
near Cahors in the Lot, which is where we think
this picture was painted ...
