Artist:
Zdzislaw Ruszkowski
Title:
Landscape with red roofed houses - an original signed
watercolour painting, unframed
Description:
Zdzislaw
Ruszkowski (1907-1991)
was a well known painter in oil and watercolour, and
printmaker, of landscapes and figure subjects. He was born
at
Tomaszow in Poland and studied
art at Krakow Academy 1924-29 and at the Warsaw
Academy 1930-32. He worked in Paris 1934-39, and moved to
Scotland in 1940 with the Polish Army settling subsequently
in 1944 in north London. He exhibited widely in Britain and
abroad and had a major retrospective at Leeds City Art
Gallery in 1966. That same year a beautifully illustrated
book titled 'Ruszkowski, Life and Work' by J P Hodin was
published by Cory, Adams and Mackay. Regular one man shows
were held at Roland Browse Delbanco in London and he also
showed at the Leicester Galleries and the New Grafton
Gallery. His work is represented in several public
collections.
The art critic and author J P Hodin (1905-1995)
was a good friend of the artist and we have been
able to acquire several original watercolours by
Ruszkowski which came originally from Paul
Hodin's library following his death.
We understand they were a gift from the artist
on special occasions, such as a birthday or
Christmas. Details and images of the other
Ruszkowski works are available on request.
The present work is an original signed watercolour
from the Hodin collection of what we think is a
landscape in the south of France, circa the late
1950s or 1960s. It is unframed and measures
about 9 x 19.8 inches image size on somewhat
irregular sized paper (trimmed to size we think
by the artist). The watercolour is in good
condition with strong colour, save for some
minor undulations to the paper...
