Artist:
Kenneth Rowell
Title:
Two figures in a Landscape - an original signed
lithograph, unframed
Description: Kenneth
Rowell (1920-1999) was a painter in watercolour and
gouache, a printmaker, photographer and theatrical
designer. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he began taking
dance lessons in the late 1930s and was a student at the
Borovansky Ballet Academy in Melbourne from 1940. Rowell
danced minor roles in some early Borovansky performances
in the early 1940s and designed backcloths and costumes
for other productions during that period. In 1950 he
settled in England and spent the next few decades in
Europe with regular trips back to Australia, returning
to live there in 1982. He made his name chiefly as a
theatrical set designer, especially in the field of
ballet, and worked with Sadler's Wells, London Theatre
Ballet, Ballet Rambert, Royal Danish Ballet and other
important ballet companies all over Europe and
Australia. He was also involved with opera and drama
productions.
He
died in Melbourne.
As
an painter and lithographer his work is represented in
several public collections in England and Australia,
including by seven examples of his prints in the Tate
Gallery.
The
present work is an original lithograph, pencil signed,
dated (19)64 and numbered 11 from a small edition of 25
prints, and titled in pencil verso 'Two figures in a
Landscape'. The image size is about 19.6 x 27.5 inches
and the sheet size is about 22.5 x 31 inches. The
lithograph was printed and published by the
Curwen Studio in 1964 on handmade and watermarked
Barcham Green Crisbrook wove paper, and it was acquired
recently from the Curwen Archive in Cambridge. The work
is in very good fresh condition, save for some tape
residue to the reverse and some creasing to the margin
along the lower edge of the print. This lithograph
is represented in the Tate Gallery's permanent print
collection and given the small print run is a scarce
item...
