Title:
Old Houses at Night - an original signed oil painting,
framed
Description: Robert
George Sang Mackechnie, RBA (1894-1975) was a painter in
oil and watercolour of landscapes, portraits and
abstracts, and a printmaker (especially of etchings and
drypoints). He was born in Glasgow and studied at
Glasgow School of Art, where he met his future wife the
artist Margaret Barnard. After their marriage in 1923
they settled in Italy in Florence and Mackechnie had a
one-man show in that city in 1924. A family bereavement
brought them home to Glasgow and subsequently, in 1934,
they settled in Rye in East Sussex.
Robert Mackechnie exhibited at the Royal Scottish
Academy, Glasgow Institute, the Royal Watercolour
Society, and the Royal Society of British Artists to
which he was elected a full member. He was also
connected to the modernist group, the Seven and Five
Society (seven painters and five sculptors). A memorial
exhibition was held at Rye Art Gallery in 1977. Apart
from Rye and its environs, Mackechnie found his
greatest joy in painting in Scotland (especially on
Iona) and in Italy.
The present work is a framed original oil painting on
board, measuring 20 x 16 inches board size and about 22
x 18 inches in what appears to be the original gold
coloured frame. It is signed by the artist with his
initials lower left and has the original exhibition
label verso from the Winter 1961 show at the Royal
Society of British Artists. This painting was #90 in
that show, titled 'Old Houses at Night', priced at 15
guineas. We think it would have been painted in
Tuscany. The painting is in good original condition save
for one or two minor chips to the paint. The frame is
in quite good condition for its age but does have some
minor losses...
