Artist:
Roy Slade
Title:
Island - an original signed oil painting on board,
unframed
Description: Roy
Slade (born 1933, Cardiff) is well known on both sides
of the Atlantic as a painter and art teacher. He
studied at Cardiff School of Art under James Cresser
Tarr 1949-54 and gained his teaching degree at the
University of Wales 1954. After National Service in
Malaya in the Army he returned to Wales and took a post
teaching art and design at Heolgam School, Bridgend. By
1957 he became very interested in the study and theory
of colour, line, shape, form and texture, and his own
painting became more and more abstract. In 1958 he had a
one man show at the influential Howard Roberts Gallery
in Cardiff, followed by other shows at The New Art
Centre in Sloane Street, Chelsea 1960; Coventry Art
Gallery 1964; and the Park Square Gallery, Leeds 1969.
His career as a teacher saw him move from Wales to
Nottingham 1960-64, and then to Leeds College of Art
with Eric Atkinson 1964-67.
Roy Slade settled in the United States in July 1967 and
became an American citizen in 1975. He has enjoyed
considerable success as a painter and teacher and has
had a number of solo shows in America, including at the
Jefferson Place Gallery, Washington DC; Pyramid Gallery,
Washington DC; and the Robert Kidd Gallery, Birmingham,
Michigan. Slade's work is held by The Contemporary Art
Society, The Arts Council, Westinghouse Corporation,
etc. He was Director of the Corcoran Art Gallery in
Washington DC 1972-77, Director of the Cranbrook Art
Museum 1977-95, and President of the Cranbrook Academy
of Art 1977-95, and now lives in Florida.
The present work is an unframed original oil on board,
signed and dated 1960 and titled 'Island' to the
reverse. It measures about 6 x 24.4 inches and is
unframed. The painting has been in the same ownership
since it was acquired from the artist some fifty years
ago, and we think it probable that it was painted along
the south coast of Wales. The work is generally in good
original condition, save for a 'bump' to one corner
upper left which has resulted in relatively minor paint
loss to that corner. This scarce early painting shows
Roy Slade's development as an artist, sitting as it does
delightfully between representation and abstraction...
