Title:
'Patchwork Quilt' - an original signed hand tinted
etching, framed
Description: John
Heagan Eames, RE (1900-2002) was an American watercolour
painter and etcher with strong connections to European
culture. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and spent
many years travelling between his home in New
England, New York, and Britain and France in particular.
His home was in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and later at
nearby Wiscasset. Eames
graduated from Harvard in 1922 and then attended the
Harvard Graduate School of Architecture. He worked
for nearly ten years in architectural offices in New
York before moving to London to study at the Royal
College of Art under Robert Sargent Austin and Malcolm
Osborne.
Eames exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1934, mainly
etchings which strong architectural interest in the
early years, and also at the Art Institute of Chicago
and the New York World's Fair 1939, etc. His work is in
a number of public collections, including the Library of
Congress in Washington DC and the Metropolitan Museum of
Art, New York. An exhibition of his paintings and
etchings was held at the Bates College Museum of Art in
Lewiston, Maine 1992. John Heagan Eames was a Senior
Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers in
London.
The present work is a framed original hand tinted
etching, pencil signed by the artist lower right, and
titled 'Patchwork Quilt' on the Bankside Gallery Royal
Painter Etchers Members Exhibition label verso. The
exhibition was held in the mid 1990s although the
etching may well be of an earlier date. It isn't
editioned but we think it would have been produced in
very small numbers due to the hand colouring involved
with each print. The etching measures about 7 x 8.3
inches image size and about 12.5 x 14.5 inches in its
relatively simple frame. The etching is in very good
condition but the frame does have some minor chips, some
dents to the mount and the glass is missing...
