Arthur Crossthwaite Murry, NEAC (1902-1984) was
a
painter of landscapes, figures and coastal scenes in oil
and watercolour.
Born in Dulwich he studied
at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and later
at the Slade
School. Murry exhibited at the Royal Society of British
Artists, the London Group, and with the New English Art
Club and the National Society of Painters and Gravers of
which two groups he was a full member. He was also
elected to membership of the Art Workers Guild. Examples
of his work are held by the National Portrait Gallery
and Manchester Art Gallery. He lived for many years in
London.
The present work is an original watercolour titled 'The
Jetty', painted we think in France, measuring about 9.8
x 13.8 inches image size. The watercolour is signed by
Richard Murry, dated 1938 and inscribed (later) 'to
Peggy '41'. It was exhibited as #60 in the New English
Art Club show held in Winter 1938/39 and the painting is
still housed in its original frame with the NEAC label
verso. The watercolour is in good, fresh condition...
