Artist:
Harold Wood
Title:
Shylock - signed painting in acrylic, framed
Description: Harold
Wood (born 1918, Lancashire) is a painter of portraits,
figure subjects and landscapes, in oil and
watercolour. From 1935 he trained as a decorative artist
with the Leyland Paint Company and studied drawing and
painting part time at the Harris School of Art,
Preston. After war service he worked as an illustrator
and model maker in London and also studied etching at
the Central School of Arts and Crafts. Wood began
painting full time in the early 1950s, and he has had a
number of one-man shows including the Zwemmer Gallery
1954, Beaux Arts Gallery 1956, Grosvenor Gallery 1964,
Bramante Gallery Victoria 1968 & 1970, Kamp Gallery,
Chicago, USA 1998, and Vanguard Gallery, Cork 2003.
Since undertaking important commissions for clients in
Saudi Arabia and Oman, Harold Wood was referred to as
'The Painter of the Arab World'. He moved to Ireland in
1980 and has lived at Arlinstown in County Cork.
The present work is an original painting in acrylic,
signed and dated 1972 and titled 'Shylock' lower left.
It measures about 19.8 x 12.6 inches image size and
about 27 x 19.5 inches in what we think is its original
1970s frame. The painting is in good original condition
and the frame is in good order too.
This work is very well observed and depicts the best
known known character from William Shakespeare's play
'The Merchant of Venice'. It is possible that Harold
Wood painted this work on commission for someone in the
acting profession as he had many clients from the world
of film, television and the stage including the late Sir
John Mills...
