Description: Gordon
House (1932-2004) was born in Pontardawe, South Wales
and was well known as a printmaker, painter, and
designer. His family moved to Hertfordshire when he was
young and he studied art at Luton, then St Albans,
and later worked under an ecclesiastical sculptor,
Theodor Kern. He embarked on a career in the 1950s as a
graphic designer and by the end of the decade was
exhibiting his paintings in solo shows in London. His
reputation grew rapidly in the 1960s and in addition to
his exhibited work he was commissioned to design album
covers for The Beatles and later for Wings. His
paintings and prints were shown at numerous major
exhibitions internationally, including the Royal
Academy, the London Group, Redfern Gallery, Carnegie
Institute, Brooklyn Museum, Waddington Galleries, etc,
and are held in many public collections including the
Victoria and Albert Museum, British Council, Tate
Gallery, and the Contemporary Art Society.
The
present works are three original etchings from the
London Bridges series printed from shaped copper plates
on RWS paper at the Kelpra Studio in 1985. The etchings
are 'Waterloo Bridge', 'Lambeth / Westminster Bridges'
and 'Blackfriars Bridge' and each of them is pencil
signed by the artist, dated (19)85, titled and numbered
1 of 5 artist's proofs of each print. Each etching
measures about 6.3 x 13.5 inches (max) image size on a
full sheet about 15.5 x 20 inches. The etchings have the
label of the well known dealership Alan Cristea Gallery
of Cork Street, London W1 verso and also the label of
the framer John Jones Conservation Framing of London N4.
The framing was undertaken in 2002 and is to a high
standard. The etchings are in very good condition and
the silver coloured frames are in good order too save
for some minor scratches. The framed size of each work
is about 17.5 x 21.7 inches...
