Description: Richard
Ian Bentham Walker, UA, SGA (1925-2009) was a portrait,
figure and landscape painter and printmaker. Born in
Croydon, by the age 13 he had won the Royal Drawing
Society’s Founders Medal. In 1945 he had a painting
hung in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. After a
spell at Oxford and service with the RAF, he trained at
Croydon Art School and became a student teacher there
before going to the Slade School of Art in London where
he studied under William Coldstream.
He
was a professional artist since art school, specializing
in portraiture and landscape painting in both oils and
watercolours. Portraits by Richard Walker hang in the
Royal College of Music, Reading Art Gallery and the
Civic Hall at Guildford, etc. His portrait of the war
hero Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, DSO, DFC is in the
possession of the Bader family. His painting of the
London landscape viewed from the Barbican is in the
Museum of London and a similar example of his expressive
but detailed style is a painting of Canford School which
is now displayed within that school. Richard Walker was
elected a member of the United Society of Artists and of
the Society of Graphic Artists, and he exhibited widely
including at the Paris Salon and Royal Society of
Portrait Painters.
