Title:
'A View of Rye, Sussex' - a signed oil painting on
board, framed
Description: Leslie
G Davie was a landscape painter working in the period
from the 1930s to the 1960s. He lived at Hither Green in
London in the late 1930s, and painted in and around
south east London and Kent. We think he moved to Rye in
the late 1940s. He was one of eight professional artists
who founded the group RX8 in Rye in 1951, the other
founder members being John Cole ROI, Robert Mackechnie
RBA, Margaret Barnard, Michael Cammack, Geoffrey Bagley,
Walter Cole and Michael Griffiths. RX8 held just one
exhibition in 1951 in Mermaid Street, Rye and the
following year they joined with a group of younger
artists to form the more broadly based Rye Society of
Artists, which still flourishes today.
The
present work is an original oil painting on board
measuring about 12 x 19.3 inches board size and about
15.2 x 22.5 inches in its frame. The painting is signed
and dated 1963 and is a view towards the ancient town of
Rye in East Sussex. Both the painting and frame are in
generally good condition for their age and the work is
'ready to hang'...
