Artist: Sine Mackinnon

Title: View to the sea (Provence, France) - a signed oil painting on board, framed     

Description: Born in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland, Sine MacKinnon (1901-1996) studied at the Slade School in London under Henry Tonks from 1918–1924, winning many prizes in painting and drawing. She then moved to Paris, having two exhibitions there before returning to London. Her first British solo show was at the Goupil Gallery, London in 1928. A year later she held a joint exhibition with Stephen Bone at the Fine Art Society, London, where they both exhibited paintings of Connemara. Mackinnon also exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Redfern Gallery, Alex Reid and Lefevre, Arthur Tooth, and the Leicester Galleries, showing mainly landscapes, which occasionally showed the influence of surrealism.

She travelled extensively throughout Europe, painting in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Greece and Switzerland but for most of her life she resided in France. She is best known for her paintings of Paris and of Provence, one of which is held in the collection of the Tate Gallery.  She is also represented in other public collections in Britain and France.

The present work measures 15 x 18 inches image size and about 21 x 24.5 inches in its relatively modern frame. It is an oil painting on board, signed lower right, and although not titled verso we think this was painted almost certainly in the artist's beloved Provence.  The work is likely to date to the late 1950s or very early 1960s, and has quite a strong Surrealist feel to it.  The painting is in very good untouched condition, save for one or two very minor chips to the paint, and the frame is in excellent condition. It is ready to hang...
