Douglas Swan:
Douglas Swan (1930-2000) was a gifted painter of both
representational and abstract works, in oil, watercolour and
mixed media. He was born of Scottish parents in New
Britain,
Connecticut, United States and came to Scotland with his
family in 1936, living in Arbroath. He studied art at
Dundee College of Art, then under Ian Fleming at the Patrick
Allan-Fraser School of Art in Arbroath, and finally under
William Scott in London with whom he painted in Somerset and
then in Cornwall. Swan won a scholarship from the Royal
Scottish Academy in 1954, and in 1957 he gained a British
Council Italian Government Scholarship.
Swan's work was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy,
London Group, Gimpel Fils, Artists' International
Association, Young Contemporaries, Richard Demarco
Gallery Edinburgh, and at many galleries in Italy,
Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and
Switzerland. He lived at Carnoustie in Angus, and later
in Germany.
