RA, LG, RWA (1908-1997)
was a painter of urban landscapes
(especially London), figure subjects and portraits,
mainly in oil. Born in Paddington, West London, he
spent much of his childhood in Fulham. He studied at
Hammersmith School of Art 1928-30 and at Goldsmiths'
College of Art 1930-33 under James Bateman. He held his
first one man show at The Cooling Galleries in London in
1934, and had many other solo exhibitions subsequently
including at The Leicester Galleries in 1946 and 1952,
at The Zwemmer Gallery in 1961 and 1965, and a major
retrospective at The Royal Academy 1982. Weight
exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1931 (elected ARA
1955 and RA 1965) and was also elected to the Royal
Society of British Artist 1934, the London Group 1950,
and the Royal West of England Academy 1954. His work is
represented in many public collections including the
Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British
Museum, Imperial War Museum, and The Fitzwilliam and
Ashmoleon Museums. He was also an influential teacher at
the Royal College of Art, being a tutor 1947-57 and then
Professor of Painting 1957-73.
