(Helen) Jean Young, RBA, NEAC (1914-1995)
was a painter in oil of landscapes, figure subjects and
interiors, which were characterised by her use of
brilliant colour and her strong sense of design. Born in
London she studied while still at school under Otway
McCannell at Farnham School of Art; then at the Regent
Street Polytechnic School of Art for two years; later
with John Skeaping at the London Zoo; at the Royal
Academy Schools 1933-38; and then in Florence 1938. She
exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the
London Group, the Royal Society of British Artists, New
English Art Club and the Womens International Art Club.
Jean Young was elected a member of the prestigious Royal
Society of British Artists in 1948 and also of the New
English Art Club. She lived for many years at Northwood
in Middlesex.
