Derek Carruthers (born 1935, Penrith, Cumbria) is a well known artist and teacher . He studied art at King’s College, Newcastle University 1953-57, where his teachers included Victor Pasmore and Lawrence Gowing.  He taught at Sunderland College of Art 1957-64, and later retired as Professor of Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham. Carruthers was influenced in his early career by Pasmore. He had solo shows in Newcastle 1957 and at Drian Galleries in London 1963-65. He was included in the Arts Council show ‘Construction England’ 1963. His work is held in several public collections including Leicester University and public galleries in Bradford and Kendal. The artist lives near to Nottingham
