Stewart Marshall Lees, RWS, RSW, ROI (1926-2008) was a well-known Scottish born landscape painter. He was born at Auchertool in Fife and after the war he studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Sir William Gillies and Leonard Rosoman. Lees graduated in 1952 and thereafter he taught initially in Scotland and later at Nottingham College of Art from 1960-1984. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1954, at the Royal Academy from 1978, the New English Art Club from 1976, and also with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (elected a member 1987) and with the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, of which two groups he was also a member. His work is held in a number of public collections, including the University of Nottingham, University of Chichester (Otter Gallery), University of Glasgow, NHS Fife, and the Scottish Arts Council. Stewart Lees lived in Nottingham for many years and late in life returned to Scotland and died in Edinburgh in 2008.
